Raising children who love the Lord and respect His Word is not an easy task, especially in this day and age. Satan is using any vice possible to lure our children away from their loving and almighty God, namely by perverting and diluting the truth. Our task is simple, yet daunting. We’re called to nurture them and bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). But how can we manage unless we spend time with them in meaningful discussion daily? The truth is, if we don’t accept the responsibility of guiding our children’s steps, then someone else will. The “gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction!” (Matthew 7:13).

The importance for us to read and study God’s Word with our children daily to critical for their spiritual growth. As the great psalmist said, “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked...But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:1-2). If we seek God’s counsel and meditate on His Word daily, we WILL be truly blessed and so will our children. For where else will we find the food we need to nurture them but in God’s Word?

Tyrel Hatfield is a graduate of Oklahoma Christian University, where he earned a B.A. degree in advertising and a minor in broadcasting (’94). Tyrel has served as the Youth and Children’s minister for the South College church of Christ in Tahlequah, Oklahoma since 2000. He also directs two summer camp sessions each year. With his brother, Justin, he co-founded Little Acorn, LLC, in 2004 and together the pair have co-authored four highly successful Vacation Bible School curricula. He and his wife, Lisa, are parents of Madilyn, Emma, and Nolan.

Justin Hatfield earned a B.A. degree in Bible and a minor in mass communications from Oklahoma Christian University. Justin has counseled at many youth camps across the United States and since 2002, has served as Youth and Pulpit minister at congregations in Virginia and South Carolina. Justin currently serves as the Family minister for the Blue Starr church of Christ in Claremore, Oklahoma. He and his wife, Kari, are the parents of Harper Grace.
